Acne Myth Busters

Author: Terri King

Are you one of the almost 17 million people who suffer from acne? Acne is not a serious health threat but it is one of the most common skin diseases. Understanding the causes of acne is your first step toward prevention.

Everyone has an opinion about the causes of acne and through the years various myths have been passed down.

The following are a few of the most common acne myths.

Myth: Acne is a teenage problem

Fact: Acne is a common problem not only among teens but also adults. Acne is usually found among 12 to 24 year olds, but individuals in their 30's, 40's and 50's may have acne. Hormone fluctuations, stress, genetics, drugs, and many other factors contribute to acne.

Myth: Eating greasy foods or chocolate will cause acne

Fact: Many scientific studies have concluded that there is no connection between acne and your diet. Eating greasy foods is not healthy for your diet, but it will not cause your acne to flare up.

Myth: Scrub; Scrub; Scrub your face

Fact: Scrubbing your face will not prevent acne. Acne is caused by blocked hair follicles. Scrubbing your face could actually make your acne worse. Applying pressure to your face can cause the hair follicles to become blocked, which would cause acne. Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser.

Myth: Popping pimples will make them clear up quickly

Fact: When you squeeze or pick your pimples you are making it worse. This habit could cause skin infections and scarring. Don't squeeze or pop that pimple!

Myth: Shaving causes more acne

Fact: Men with acne can shave their face. Depending on the severity of your acne you will have to decide if an electric razor or a safety razor is more comfortable. If you use a safety razor, make sure that the blade is sharp and that you have softened the beard hairs with soap and water before you apply shaving cream.

Myth: Wearing makeup causes more acne

Fact: Choose your makeup carefully. Use products that are oil free. Lip products that contain moisturizers may cause small pimples around your lips.

Myth: Getting a tan will help clear up acne

Fact: Tanning will not clear up your acne. Tanning may hide your acne but it is only temporary. Tanning can cause skin cancer, promote aging, and damage your skin.

If you are an acne sufferer, follow the facts and not the myths. See a dermatologist to start a prevention program best suited for your skin type.
