Having The "I Want To Quit My Job" Conversation With Your Spouse

Author: Tino Buntic

It's one issue that a lot of new entrepreneurs leaving the corporate world need to face, having the "I want to quit my job" conversation with your spouse. It's a difficult step in the entrepreneurial journey. Starting a new business, a new venture is both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. The I want to quit my job conversation is a big part of that nerve-wracking experience and it is not a topic that is talked about often.

For that reason, I was happy to see blogger Pamela Slim, of Escape From Cubicle Nation, tackle the issue. In short, she advises to put it into a perspective for your spouse in terms of following your dreams, how it could make your life better, and how your life would not be fulfilling if you didn't go through with it. It is a great blog posting and I encourage anybody thinking if leaving the corporate world to make that entrepreneurial leap to read it.

I would like to expand on Pamelas advice, though. I would go further to include the following in the I want to quit my job conversation:

  • Don't tell your spouse about your idea, sell it to her. She is probably concerned about the lack of stability that a corporate job provides. Sell her on the idea of earning more money. A new venture may struggle for the first little while but it could pay off big time down the road and provide more wealth then can be achieved in a corporate job
  • Does your wife hate her own job. Perhaps your new venture will require hired help in due time. Perhaps she will be able to, eventually, come on board and quit her job. It could be a way outfor her too. Perhaps you could be a team. Everybody wants to be their own boss; this could be her chance
  • If you're new venture does well, it could support both of you. Perhaps it will allow your wife to retire early and enjoy herself. This would, by far, beat her 3-week corporate world vacation.

As you see, Im of the opinion that you should sell this to your spouse. Sure, it's something that you want to do, but it could also benefit your spouse and selling this to her is another good option.

I think most people would love to quit their corporate job; those that cant admit this are usually lieing to themselves.
